Biden’s new diplomatic offensive stalls

US President Joe Biden has launched a new diplomatic offensive in a renewed American effort to restore US prestige in the Global South and bolster the imperialist alliance to ensure that the Ukraine war goes on for another long year. But while a prisoner exchange with Iran has raised Western hopes of a thaw in relations with the Islamic Republic, Biden’s attempt to get the House of Saud to normalise relations with Israel have, so far, come to nothing.

The TUC at Liverpool

The 155th AGM of the TUC was not what it was in its glory days. Once upon a time it received wall-to-wall TV coverage, and with hordes of labour correspondents filling the pages of newspapers with detailed reports of debates. Now things are very different. A Google search for “TUC Congress Liverpool” brought up a tenth of the hits for Saturday’s “Fleetwood Town v Oxford United” lower league football match.

This year’s TUC annual conference summed up all that is rotten in the British labour movement. The bureaucrats, left-wing posers and the rest of the gravy-trainers were all there in Liverpool to pass the usual platitudes that pass for working class solidarity these days.

Support the doctors!

Junior doctors joined consultants in industrial action called by the British Medical Association (BMA) this week. For the first time in the history of the NHS, consultants and junior doctors stood together in joint strike action. As with previous strikes, the union made sure that patients are kept safe by ensuring that emergency services remain in place.
